Section V Winter Track Championships Feb. 18, 2012 at RIT

Class A:

Rush Henrietta is having an epic Winter Track Season this year breaking Section V records and now they have won both boys and girls Section V Championship, both by double digits!

Greece Athena’s Brian Smith breaks his own Section V 300M record again and remains undefeated in the 300M and 55M.

In the girls championships Rush Henrietta’s competition was Penfield with the final score being Rush 114 to Penfield’s 99.

On the track Penfield  started the meet strong in the 3000 with Penfield’s Katie Lembo winning and Lindsay Heyer and Blair Bartosiewicz taking 3^rd and 6^th for a total of 17 points to Rush’s 8 scored by Siobhan Quinn taking 2^nd.  Penfield’s Leila Mantilla won the 1000 with Rush’s Alana McDonald in 2^nd and Lizzie Greiner in 3^rd putting the score at 27 to 22.  Then comes Penfield’s big event the 1500M Racewalk and they did well as always with Melissa Tylock winning and Elizabeth Wilkins and Patti Carpenter taking 2^nd and 6^th, but Rush was not going to leave this event unguarded this year and they had Jaymee Caplan and Samantha Bahr answer those points by taking 3^rd and 4^th.   (3 events: Penfield 46, Rush 32).  Rush made up a little ground in the 600 with Alana McDonald winning the event and Penfield’s Ilana Schnaufer taking 2^nd. (P:54, R:42).  Rush’s Tiaja Jeffries scored a point in the 55M.  In the 1500M Penfield got 18 unanswered points  with 1000M winner Mantilla take first for a double win and 3000M winner Lembo take 2^nd (nice job girls, a lot of hard running and a lot of points for Penfield). So now we’re at Penfield 72 Rush 43.  In the 300M Rush came back with 6 unanswered points with Ceara Watson and Zanah Francis taking 4^th and 5^th.  (P:73,R:49).  The 55M Hurdles had high jump sensation Victoria Shaffer take 2^nd and Penfield’s Abigail Bourcy and Nialah Owens take 5^th and 6^th.  So after the individual running events it’s Penfiled 76, Rush 57.

Rush won this meet in the field.  Staring with the high jump where Rush’s Victoria Shaffer scored 10 unanswered points and got her 2^nd high jump PR in two weeks after a long wait with a 5-7 which dominates all of Secton V by 3 inches and won the event.  In the pole vault Rush’s Rachel Yuhas took 5^th over Penfield’s Molly Luger based on misses at 8-6.  In the long jump Rush got a 4^th from Sandra Au.  In the triple Penfield’s Olivia Cushman took 5^th and Rush’s Au picked up another point at 6^th.   Then comes the shot put and Rush put up 16 unanswered points with Ayanna Sanchez-Jones taking  1^st and Chelsea Prescott taking 3^rd.  For the field events Rush had 33 to Penfields’s 3.

So going into the relays its Rush 84, Penfield 79.  In the 4x800 Penfield took 2^nd to Rush’s 3^rd (R90 P87).  In the 4x400 Rush took 1^st to Penfield’s 2^nd (R100,P95).  And in the 4x200M Rush took 2^nd to Penfields 4^th and the final score is 114-99.

Rush’s competition for the Boys championships was Hilton and they beat them 99 to 80.

On the track Rush started with 10 points in the 3200M with Mickey Burke just missing the win and taking 2^nd and Brennan Root taking 5^th, with Hilton’s Corey Roth putting 4 points on the board with at 4^th.  Colby Burke won the 1000 with Hilton’s Ross Pirnie taking 2^nd and Rush’s Pat Aiken at 3^rd. (R26,H12).  Hilton’s Nigel Walker took 3^rd in the 600M and Rush’s Alex Raymond squeaked out a point taking 6^th (R27, H18).  In the 1600M Hilton’s Pirnie took 3^rd and Rush’s Burke and Sweeney took 4^th and 5^th (R33,H24) In the sprints Rush had 14 unanswered points with Tim Johnson taking 4^th in the 55M  and Josh Wrap and Peter Behnk taking 3^rd and 4^th in the 300M (R47,H24).   Hilton had 12 unanswered points in the 55M Hurdles with Justin Contestabile, Jordan Caster, Nigel Walker taking 3,4,5 (if Hilton could have put Pat Meyer in 4 events that might have been 10 more points).  At the end of the track events, Rush 47, Hilton 36.

In the field Hilton has super jumper Pat Meyer, but there were some surprises, Rush’s Chauncey Scissum came in with a 43-04 seed and did a Beamonesque jump of 47-1 to beat Meyer in the triple jump.  In the long jump Meyer took third missing 2^nd by just ½ an inch.  Meyer prevailed in the high jump with a 6-2 win, with Scissum taking 3^rd for Rush.  And Kris Molinari prevented a 1-4 sweep by Gates in the pole vault by taking 4^th.  Hilton’s Kyle Podgers won the Shot Put and Rush’s Eliot Leubner took 3^rd.  So in the field it was Hilton 34 Rush 26.

Going into the relays it’s Rush 73 Hilton 70.  In the 4x800 Rush won and Hilton took 5^th (R83-H72).  In the 4x400 Rush won and Hilton took 3^rd (R93-H78).  And in the 4x200M Rush took 3^rd and Hilton took 5^th for a final score of Rush 99 Hilton 80.

Class B:

For the girls Canandaigua won with a huge 145.7 and Pittsford Mendon took 2^nd with 104.50, both of them beat the 6^th – 13^th teams combined.

Canandaigua dominated from the first even with Meghan and Katie McCormick taking 1-2 in the 3000 and Mendon’s Krista Roncone taking 3^rd (C20-M6)  Then another 1-2 sweep for Cdga by Lauren and Kendall D’Amore with  Katie McCormick in 4^th and Mendon’s Brenna Swetman in 5^th (C44-M8).  Mendon’s Megan Cackett and Amanda Zeccola took 2^nd and 6^th in the 1500M Racewalk and Cdga’s Alyson Hecht took 4^th (C53-M12).   In the 600 Mendon’s Kylie Ryan took 4^th, Cdga’s Meghan McCormick took 6^th.  In the 1500M Cdga used all their big guns again with Meghan and Katie running their third race of the day and Meghan winning  and Katie taking 4^th along with Lauren D’Amore taking 3^rd, Mendon had Krista Roncone at 6^th. (C73-M13).  In the sprints Cdga had Christine Lyttle and Rachel Olson take 2nd and 5^th in the 55M and Jessica Colmerauer took 3^rd in the 300M.  Mendon had Margo Trimaine in 4^th in the 55.  So on the track it’s Canandaigua 89, Mendon 17.

Mendon came on strong in the field events though.   Mendon’s Nelson Trotter won the long jump and triple jump, and they had Natalie Meyer in 3^rd for the long jump.  Canandaigua was still strong with Julia Gleason taking 2^nd in the long jump and Jessica Locke taking 4^th in the triple.  Mendon continued making up ground in the high jump with a win by Jenny Riley, a tie for 3^rd for Natalie Meyer, and a couple shares of a 4-way tie for 5^th for Nelson Trotter and Isabelle Ballet and Cdga’s Jessica Locke.  Mendon got 6 unanswered points in the shot with a 3^rd by Jenny Riley.  But Cdga came back in the vault with 10 unanswered points from  Kaitlyn Gilmor taking 2^nd and Sydney Reber taking 5^th.  On the field it was Mendon 49.5, Canandaigua 20.75.

In the relays Mendon finished strong with a 1^st in the 4x800, 2^nd in the 4x400 and 2^nd in the 4x200 to score over 100 points, 104.50, but Canandaigua’s lead was way out of reach and their 2^nd for the 4x800, 3^rd for the 4x400 and 1^st in the 4x200 finished them with 145.75 points.

The Boys Class B was as close as a championship can be with Victor beating Greece Olympia by HALF OF A POINT, 108 – 107.50.

Victor started strong on the track scoring 12 unanswered points with George Mertens  and Nathan Yost taking 2^nd and 4^th in the 3200M.  Victor extended its lead with Connor Hayward and Dylan Iadanza taking 2^nd and 3^rd in the 1000 (V26-G0).  Olympia got on the boards with Raphael Tshibangu taking 2^nd in the 600, but Victor’s MJ Erb and Anthony Nitche took 1^st and 3^rd (V42-G8).  And finishing the distances Victor again scored 8 unanswered points with Aidan Steiger taking 2^nd (V50-G8).   In the sprints Olympia made up some ground with Carnell Noble winning the 55 and Danny Seay winning the 300.  Olympia also had Craig Hardgers in 3^rd and Ja’marie Jefferson in 6^th for the 55, and Carnell Nobel in 3^rd and Ja’marie Jefferson in 6^th for the 300.  Victor just got points from Jered Hemmingway’s 4^th in the 300.  Olympia also got 14 unanswered points in the hurdles with Jermaine Junious winning and Andrew Ghent in 4^th.  So on the track its’ Olympia 56 - Victor 54.

In the field starting with high jump Olympia’s Desmond Mobley PR’d in the high jump with a 6-7, but Wayne’s Mike Morgan PR’d even bigger with at 6-8, Craig Hardgers got 3^rd from Olympia.    Victor’s Ben Maxwell won the vault, but Olympia’s Eric Hernandez avoided the shutout by tying for 5^th.  Olympia got the points in the long /triple with Mobley and Hardgers taking 3^rd and 6^th in the long, and Mobley and Junious taking 4^th and 5^th in the triple.  Victor’s got shotputters though and Zach Noll, Chad Kofahl and Ed Gharzouzi scored 16 by taking 2^nd, 3^rd and 5^th respectively.  Olympia’s Matt Hanna was inched out by one-quarter of an inch, 39-4 to 39-3.75 by Gharzouzi.  That shot put measurement determined the team championship.  In the field it was Olympia 29.5 Victor 26.

Going into the relays its Olympia 85.5, Victor 81.  In the 4x800 Victor wins and Olympia only gets 5^th (V91-G87.5).  The 4x400 is where the distance meets the sprints and has Olympia as the top seed at 3:40.58 and Victor at 3:40.59.  They both beat their seeds, but Victor did it by more winning 3:37.06 to Olympia’s 3:39.68.  In the final event if Olympia wins and Victor takes less than 4^th, it’s Olympia’s.  Olympia won the 4x200, but Victor made the 4^th they needed to prevent a repeat by Olympia and win the 2012 Section V Class B Championships!

Class C:

Wayland Cohocton beats Batavia as both teams exceed 100 points with W-C 127 Batavia 101.

W-C started very strong taking 20 points to Batavia’s 2 in the 3000 with Meghan Curtin winning and Hannah Groshner and Caroline Wensel taking 3^rd and 4^th.  Batavia freshmen Kaylee Cassidy prevented the shutout with her 5^th.  In the 1000 W-C’s Courtney Lewis took 2^nd and Batavia’s Alexis Kindig took 5^th.  Both teams represented in the 1500M Racewalk but W-C prevailed with Melissa Coombs and Libby Keene taking 2^nd and 4^th and Batavia’s Rachel Henrici taking 5^th.  In the 600 it was almost all W-C and Batavia with W-C’s Breonica Smith winning and Courtney Lewis and Chelsea Bartlett taking 5^th and 6^th.  For Batavia Rebecca Canale and Kelsey Hill took 3^rd and 4^th.  In the 1500 W-C scored big again with Meghan Curtin,  Hanna Groshner and Melissa Coombs going 2,4,5. Batavia’s Alexis Kindig got the 6^th.  In the sprints Batavia’s shot put phenom Erica Williams scored a 5^th in the 55, W-C’s Breonica Smith got a 3^rd in the 300 and Batavia’s Kristen Boyd got a 6^th.  On the track it was Wayland-Cohocton 73, Batavia 20.

In the field Batavia’s Erica Williams blasted away the field by about 6 feet as usual, this time she had some scoring help with teammate Brianne Pagnello and Jenna Mancuso taking 2^nd and 5^th which made for 20 unanswered points.   High Jump was a battle with W-C’s Madelyn Schartz winning and Andreanna Bowers taking 3^rd to Batavia’s Taylor Harness and Natalie Sharpe taking 2^nd and 4^th.  Batavia’s Brenna Clark scored a 3^rd and W-C’s scored a 4^th in the pole vault.  And in the long and triple Batavia got a 2^nd, 5^th and 6^th LJ from Harkness, Brianne Paganello and Brianna Clark, a 2^nd 4^th and 6^th in the TJ from Robin Clemm, Harkness and Kelsey Hill, and W-C’s  answer was Aimee Pfunter’s 3^rd’s in both long and triple.  In the field, Batavia 62, Wayland-Cohocton 32.  (62 is a lot for just the field events).

In the relays W-C won the 4x800, and took 3^rd in the 4x400 and 4x200 to finish with a winning total of 127.  Batavia got 4^th in the 4x800 and 4x400 and 2^nd in the 4x200 for a total of 101.

For the Boys Batavia won a tight match with Aquinas with both scoring over 100, Batavia 113, Aquinas 106.

Batavia started strong with Collin Mulcahy winning the 3000M while still being able to conserve his energy to win the 1600M and even ran the 600M.  Batavia got a 3^rd from Ty Demmer in the 3200, and Jon Laird took 4^th in the 100 and 6^th in the 1600.  And there’s 31 unanswered points in the distance races.  Aquinas came back in the 600 though with a win by Josh Hanna and a 3^rd and 6^th by Ben Drexler and Matt Roorda.  The sprints had Aquinas’ Hanna make the double win by adding the 300 title to his 600, and Alonzo Turney winning the 55.  Ben Drexler got a 4^th in the 300.  For Batavia Eric Williams, Brandon Stevenson and Francisco Martinez took 2^nd, 4^th and 5^th in the 55, and Mitch Noble took 5^th in the 300.  Batavia’s Williams won the 55 Hurdles and Austin Klier scored a point in 6^th.  On the track it’s Batavia 56 Aquinas 41.

In the field Eric Williams won the vault for Batavia and teammate Eldon Ortiz PR’d to take 2^nd, Aquinas Isaac Darling took 5^th.  Alonzo Turney won the long jump for Aquinas with teammate Taylor Byrne taking 2^nd, Batavia’s Francisco Martinez took 5^th.   Batavia’s James Soggs won the shot and teammates Dameon Reeves and Tyler Hoye took 3^rd and 5^th.   In the triple Aquinas’ Byrne and Turney went 2^nd 3^rd to Batavia’s Alex Egeli and Austin Klier’s 4^th 5^th.  Byrne scored 2^nd place in 3 events including high jump where teammate Nathan Bardeen took 6^th.  So on the field it was Batavia 46 Aquinas 35.

Into the relays it’s Batavia 92 Aquinas 76.  Aquinas goes 4x800 6^th, and then wins both the 4x400, and the 4x200.  But it wasn’t enough and Batavia held on for the win taking 4^th in the 4x800, 4^th in the 4x400, and 5^th in the 4x200.

Class D:

Leroy Girls beat Red Jacket 85-80.

Shealyn Doody starts things off with a Red Jacket win in the 3000.  In the 1000 Sara Coon keeps it up for Red Jacket with the win, but LeRoy starts scoring points with Becca Schwan and Julianna Lauricella taking 2^nd and 4^th.  Bridgette Dean gets the 5^th for Red Jacket in the racewalk.  Coon scores the double win taking the 600. With Leroy’s Lauricella taking 3^rd.  Samantha Turner wins the 55 for Red Jacket and Ashley Owens takes 2^nd for Leroy.  Sarah Coon goes on to a triple win by taking the 1500M with teammate Doody taking 2^nd.  In the 300 Leroy’s Christina Woodworth wins and teammate Lauricella places in her third event taking 3^rd.  Turner gets the 2^nd in 55M Hurdles for Red Jacket.  On the track it’s Red Jacket 68 – Leroy 42.

In the field Red Jacket’s Samantha Turner scores the only win for either team with her Shot Put win (beating out Karmen Auble who would have had a rare PV, LJ, SP triple win).  Ashley Owens scores 2^nd ‘s for Leroy in the long and triple jumps.  And Leroy gets a 4^th and 5^th from their vaulters Jordan Kerwin and Sarah Ehrmentraut.  In the fied: Leroy 22 – Red Jacket 10.

Down to the relays it’s Red Jacket 78 – Leroy 64.  Leroy gets a 3^rd in the 4x800 to put them up to 70, and a 2^nd in the 4x400 to put them up to 78, but Red Jacket pulls out a 6^th in the 4x400 to stay ahead at 79.  And then it’s the 4x200 and Leroy gets a 3^rd for 6 points to Red Jacket’s one point for 6^th.  Leroy wins!

Williamson Boys score 103 to win, Marion takes 2^nd with 76

Williamson scored wins by Jon Beiswanger in the 1600 and in the 1000 where teammate Rueben Marques took 4^th.  Marion scored wins by Brandon Vanderbrook in the 55 and 300, and by Cody Engelsen in the 600 and he took 2^nd to teammate Vanderbrook in the 300, and Tallon Rood took 2^nd in the 1000 and 5^th in the 1600.   Williamson picked up a 5^th in the 55 and 6^th in the 300 by Matt Wright.  They also got at 6^th in the 600 by Neil Campbell.   In the hurdles Williamson got 2^nd, 3^rd and 6^th by David Banker, Lionel Clark and Michael Bloss.  Marion got a 4^th by Ethan Koval.   On the track it was: Marion 52 Williamson 47 Marion 52.

In the field Marion got a win from Ian Gillens in the shot put.  Williamson got 2^nd’s from Max Curran in the vault and AJ Stohr in the high jump who also scored a 3^rd in the triple and a 5^th in the long jump.  Ethan  Koval of Marion got the 4^th in the TJ and Michael Bloss of Williamson got the 5^th.  On the field it was: Williamson 30 Marion 14.

Going to the relays it’s Williamson 79  Marion 66.  Marion wins the 4x400.  And Williamson wins the 4x800 takes 3^rd in the 4x400 and 3^rd in the 4x200 to win with 103.
